Painted Cake

I’ve been thinking about this one for a while now. A painted cake – the idea would incorporate my love of baking, AND my talent for art. I spent all of my spare time in high school in the “art room” – drawing, painting, silk screening, sculpting… you name it. I went on to be an art major in my first year of college. That creative drive in me has never left. So this cake was very exciting for me! Could I actually “paint” with frosting?? Well, the answer is a resounding YES!

This cake was going to be a bridal shower cake. I started with 3 – 8″ white velvet cake layers, whipped mascarpone cream and raspberry filling. I designed it with some artificial flowers as inspiration. Once I frosted the cake with a light silver-gray buttercream, and created a very smooth surface with a bench scraper, I “painted” on my flowers freehand, using craft brushes. A few sprinkles and edible glitter, then a few artificial flowers on top finished it off! I’m pretty proud of this one!
