Natalie’s 1st birthday cake

I want to share my granddaughters’ 1st birthday cake – from 2013. This was my favorite cake to date. It was certainly special because of the occasion, but I put a lot of thought and planning into this project. That is how I tackle most cake designs – I like to mull it over for a while, then it just comes together in my mind. It’s like I can see it!  Then I go to work

For this cake, I wanted it to be “girly” and pink, with lace and ruffles and roses.  I wanted to use the “ombre” technique with 3 shades of pink for the top 3 layers (I made them strawberry!), then chocolate with whipped cream filling for the bottom layers. Designed to appeal to all of the guests at the party!  Not to mention BEAUTIFUL when cut into!!  The project took about 4 hours to bake the cakes, put it together, and decorate it.  I loved every minute of it!  There is something amazing about seeing your vision come to life!  That’s true of lots of endeavors – it’s where the reward comes from.
I even made a little cupcake version of the cake – just for the guest of honor to dig into!
