Game Day Sugar Cookies and Candies

I made 2 game day treats this year – sugar cookies, and chocolate candies. Yes, the cookies are made from my Mom’s sugar cookie recipe. And yes, they are topped with store bought, canned vanilla frosting! Just the way she made them, and just the way my kids love them.

For game-day cookies, I simply cut the dough into circles, using a drinking glass that was about 3″ in diameter.

Here is the super simple recipe for these amazing sugar cookies:
(I almost always DOUBLE this recipe, since it only makes about 1 dozen 3″ cookies).

  • 1/2 c unsalted butter (room temp. – VERY important)
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

Combine in a stand mixer, with a paddle attachment.

Then add:

  • 2 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Combine til well-blended.  Mixture will be firm, and form into a ball.

Roll out onto a floured surface, to about 3/8 ” thick (or maybe a little more)
Cut out desired cookie shapes, using cookie cutters.

Place onto parchment paper, on 2 cookie sheets.

Bake at 325 degrees, for about 8 min. on middle and top racks. Then switch racks, and bake for another 4 – 5 min. You will just begin to see a light brown on the bottom edges, do NOT brown the tops.

They turned into game-day cookies using some white, and green-tinted frosting, and some nonpareils. Then I piped on the goal post, and the field goal lines. So easy, and just perfect for any football game!

I paired these treats with little chocolate chip cookie dough footballs, made with an eggless cookie dough.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH (EGGLESS) makes about 24 footballs

Ingredients for dough:

  • 3/4 c salted butter, at room temp
  • 3/4 c light brown sugar
  • 1/4 c granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 c all purpose flour toasted (spread on a baking sheet lined with parchment, and toast in the oven at 350 degrees for 5 min.)
  • 2-4 Tbsp water, til dough is of molding consistency
  • 1 c mini chocolate chips

For coating:

  • 16 oz chocolate bark
  • 3 oz white chocolate bark

Combine all dough ingredients into a soft dough. Add chocolate chips last. Form into small footballs using a small ice cream scoop to measure size. Chill. Dip each football into melted chocolate bark. Allow to dry, and decorate with some melted white chocolate bark – piped on for the football ties. They can be made with a peanut butter filling as well. See my prior post for peanut butter balls. Both are delicious!
