A tart is the perfect way to make food both delicious, and BEAUTIFUL! I love sweet and savory tarts. This french onion bacon tart is a superstar in the savory tart world. It has sauteed sweet onions, gruyere cheese, and crispy bacon. It has a creamy custard filling, and a buttery pie crust that brings all of these delectable flavors together.
Recipe: (makes 1 – 10 inch tart)
1 pie crust (either store bought, or homemade)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out to 1/4″ thick, and place pie dough into a 10″ tart pan with a removable bottom. Freeze tart shell in the pan, for about 20 min. Remove from freezer, line tart shell with parchment, and dry beans (to maintain tart form).
Bake on a sheet pan, for about 20 min, then remove parchment and beans, and bake for another 10 min til lightly brown. Cool.
2-3 large sweet onions, sliced
1 c shredded Gruyere cheese
1/2 lb bacon, chopped
2 tsp French onion dry soup mix
2 tsp minced fresh thyme
1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper
3 eggs
3/4 c heavy cream, or half and half
Cook chopped bacon in a skillet til lightly brown. Remove bacon to drain on a paper towel.
Add onions to the same skillet, into the bacon drippings. Saute til golden brown, and soft, for about 20 min. Stir frequently. Add thyme, onion soup mix, and pepper. Stir to combine. Remove from heat to cool.
Add shredded cheese to bottom of tart shell. Next, add the sauteed onions.
Whisk together the eggs, and cream. Pour over tart. Top with bacon.
Bake on a sheet pan for about 25 min. at 350, til lightly brown.
Cool, and serve.
